Bulldog Security Products: a family business with high-tech equipment and international markets

Long-established family business Bulldog Security Products Limited, which produces a wide range of security products for home and international markets, has renewed its membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the official police security initiative.

The company’s first product was designed and constructed in 1984 at the home of engineer Ray Jordan, who wanted to make towing a caravan safer. Ray went on to build 25 caravan stabilisers - laying the foundation for a business which has become known for being a producer of tough, high quality products for the domestic, commercial and leisure marketplaces.

From its early beginnings in a garden shed and shortly after from a nearby Nissen hut, Bulldog moved on to manufacture from a number of factory units on the Stretton Road Industrial Estate in Much Wenlock, Shropshire.

Bulldog remain committed to manufacturing in the UK and have over the years invested heavily in the latest high-tech manufacturing equipment which now includes a laser-cutting machine, robot welder and CNC press brake ensuring that the high quality standards expected of Bulldog are met.

The company has a wide range of security products which help protect cars, motorbikes, quad bikes, caravans, trailers, buildings, plant equipment and equestrian facilities and equipment. Its products include door locks, hitchlocks, wheelclamps, security posts, security chains and GPS tracking systems.

Having products that are sufficiently robust to withstand attack and deter and reduce crime is at the heart of its security product range. The importance of crime prevention is underlined on the company’s homepage, which displays the SBD logo to show that it is working with the Police Service to build safer communities. Bulldog has 11 products listed on the SBD website that meet Police Preferred Specification. Many of these products have been certificated to Sold Secure standards. Others have been certified to Homologation Directive MP03 Mechanical Security Systems for Vehicles and Part of Vessels (Netherlands).

Although its products are used throughout the UK and have been marketed worldwide, Bulldog continues to be a family-run business. Ray’s eldest son, Ian Jordan, is Managing Director, and Ian’s wife, Yvonne, is Company Secretary. Ian’s brother, Neil Jordan, is also a Director.

The company employs other family members too and prides itself on having many long-serving members of staff, which Ian believes has proved to be the key to the company’s success over the last 36 years.

Ian explained: “Having a wealth of experience within the company means we know our products and our marketplaces. People buy into people and the personal customer service we provide is at the heart of what we do. This ‘Bulldog ethos’ – has enabled us to continue to build customer support and maintain customer loyalty.

“Our objective has always been to provide quality products which prevent people becoming victims of crime. We have always been willing to support the police by providing products and supporting leaflets for display at crime prevention shows and promotional events,” added Ian.

About Secured by Design (SBD)

SBD is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives across the UK. PCPI is a not-for-profit organisation and Board Members include senior police officers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who control and direct the work PCPI carries out on behalf of the Police Service.

Products must be subject to rigorous testing and additionally be fully certificated by an independent, third-party certification body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) before being allowed to carry the SBD logo - this is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for securityrelated products in the UK.
